Marrakech Travel Guide: Medina, History, Day Trips & Where to Stay

A source-backed Marrakech guide covering the medina, Jemaa el-Fna, Koutoubia, palaces and gardens, neighbourhoods, day trips, famous hotels and first-time visitor questions.

Marrakech is one of Morocco’s historic imperial cities and one of the country’s main tourism hubs. The Moroccan National Tourist Office highlights Jemaa el-Fna, the Koutoubia, Majorelle Garden, El Badi Palace and Menara among the city’s best-known places. Its appeal is not only monuments: the medina, souks, riads, food, hammams, contemporary Gueliz/Hivernage and access to the Atlas and surrounding countryside make it a practical base for several different types of trip.

A short history of Marrakech

UNESCO dates the foundation of Marrakech to 1070–1072 under the Almoravids and describes the city as a major political, economic and cultural centre over a long period. For a visitor, that history is visible in the walled medina, Koutoubia, kasbah, palaces, madrasas, souks and traditional courtyard houses, alongside the newer districts that developed beyond the historic core.

What to see in Marrakech

Jemaa el-Fna and the medina

The square is the main reference point for first-time visitors and an entry point into the souks. Expect the atmosphere to change significantly between daytime and evening. Treat entertainment, photos and animal encounters as commercial interactions: ask or understand the price before participating rather than assuming something is free.

Koutoubia

The Koutoubia minaret is one of the city’s main landmarks. Access rules for active religious spaces should be respected; do not promise mosque interior access to travellers unless the specific site permits it.

Palaces, gardens and museums

Bahia Palace, El Badi Palace, Menara and Majorelle are among the places travellers commonly combine with the medina. Opening hours and ticket prices can change, so those details should be fetched or checked when maintaining a specific attraction page.

Where to stay in Marrakech

Inside the medina

Best for atmosphere and walking access to many historic sights. The trade-off is that taxis and private cars cannot reach every alley, so confirm the nearest vehicle-access point with your riad.

Hivernage

A modern hotel district suited to travellers who want larger hotels, pools and easier vehicle access while remaining close to the historic centre.

Gueliz

A practical choice for cafés, contemporary restaurants, shops and a more modern city feel.

Out-of-centre resorts

Properties on larger estates can provide more space and resort facilities but usually require transport to reach the medina.

Well-known Marrakech hotels

These are examples, not a ranking and not an endorsement. Their own official websites are the source for current room types, facilities, rates and booking conditions.

  • La Mamounia: a historic palace hotel whose official history traces the modern hotel to the early twentieth century on an older garden estate.
  • Royal Mansour Marrakech: a luxury property built around private riads within a large estate near the old city.
  • Four Seasons Resort Marrakech: a resort in Hivernage with gardens, pools and spa facilities.
  • Selman Marrakech: a luxury resort outside the busiest medina streets with a strong equestrian identity.
  • The Oberoi, Marrakech: a resort set in extensive gardens outside the old city.

Best day-trip categories from Marrakech

  • Atlas / Ourika: mountain scenery and villages; exact hike difficulty depends on the product.
  • Agafay: a rocky desert landscape closer to Marrakech; it is not the same as the large Saharan dune fields around Merzouga.
  • Essaouira: Atlantic medina, port and beach atmosphere.
  • Ouarzazate / Aït Benhaddou: a long road day over the High Atlas; better suited to travellers comfortable with substantial driving.
  • Merzouga / Sahara: a multi-day overland trip, not a quick day excursion.

Questions first-time visitors repeatedly ask

Medina or Gueliz?

Choose the medina for immersion and walkability to historic sights; choose Gueliz/Hivernage for easier vehicle access and a more modern hotel environment.

Will Google Maps work in the souks?

It can help, but narrow lanes, closed passages and multiple entrances can make navigation confusing. Save your accommodation pin and ask your riad for the best walking route.

How should I handle unsolicited “help”?

Do not follow a stranger simply because they say a route is closed or offer to “show” you somewhere. Use a map, ask a business/official source, or use a pre-arranged licensed guide when you want guided help.

Taxi or transfer from the airport?

Both can work. The practical issue for medina accommodation is the final pedestrian section. A pre-arranged transfer is useful if the provider coordinates the nearest drop-off point with your riad.

How many days?

Three full days is enough for a focused city visit; add more if you want spa time, shopping or day trips. Do not compress Marrakech, Essaouira, Atlas and Sahara into a schedule that leaves most of the trip inside a vehicle.
