Merzouga is the gateway most travellers use for the Erg Chebbi dune field. Camps range from simple bivouac-style setups to permanent luxury camps with private bathrooms and hotel-style beds.
Standard versus luxury camps
The label “luxury” is not standardized. Ask specifically whether your tent has a private bathroom, heating or cooling, electricity, hot water and fixed bedding.
Getting to camp
Transfers may be by camel, 4×4 or a combination. If you do not want to ride a camel, request an alternative before departure.
Meals and evening atmosphere
Most overnight packages include dinner and breakfast. Music around a fire is common, but the exact program varies by camp and season.
What to bring
Take a small overnight bag, warm layers, water, a headlamp or phone light, and anything you need overnight. Large luggage can usually remain with the vehicle or at the hotel, depending on the arrangement.
Questions to ask before booking
- Is the bathroom private or shared?
- How is the camp reached?
- What meals are included?
- Is the camp inside or beside the dunes?
- What is the cancellation policy?
