The road from Marrakech to Merzouga is one of Morocco’s great overland journeys. The distance is substantial, so the quality of the trip depends on how the driving is broken up.
Why three days is the usual minimum
A three-day itinerary allows the journey to be divided with an overnight in the Dades or nearby valley region and a second night near Merzouga. It still involves long driving, but major stops can be included without turning the trip into a single transfer.
Main landscapes on the way
The route typically crosses the High Atlas, reaches the Aït Benhaddou and Ouarzazate area, continues through the Dades Valley and Todra region, and then heads toward Erfoud and Merzouga.
Three days versus four days
Four days gives more time for valley walks, local stops and a slower return. Travellers who dislike long road days usually prefer the longer version.
One-way options
If you also want to visit Fes, consider a route that starts in Marrakech and ends in Fes, or the reverse, instead of returning to the same city.
